Love the book by Emma Dodd? Then you’ll love our plan, “I Love Bugs”. This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day kindergarten plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. Activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.

This “I Love Bugs” sub plan contains 15 slides and includes a 4 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a read aloud of Emma Dodd's book. Children are questioning, predicting, and building vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. Following the read aloud the class will use the “Predictable Chart” activity to practice making and reading sentences about bugs. The writing extension activity will help students make a text-to-self connection using picture and words. (This is optional class book material!) The “Bug Riddles and Picture Match” is a listening activity your class will enjoy. The little book “I Love Colorful Bugs” will offer practice in highlighting key vocabulary, writing the color words, one-to-one word correspondence, and read-to-self skills. Children will love the “Buggy Word Find Puzzle” and the interactive “I Can Spell BUG” poem.

In the area of Math the class will complete a fun graphing activity, followed by discussion that analyzes and compares data. They will practice number sense by counting forward and backward while singing the “Tiny Speckled Bugs” count down song (Five Green Speckled Frogs tune). The “Creepy Bug Number Story” and the “Ladybug Spot Count” activities will give students practice in counting, matching, and writing a number story that corresponds with a picture.

Finally, suggested lesson extensions in Music, Computer, and Large Motor Group activities are included in this plan.
