Love the book by Jeanne Titherington? Then you’ll love our plan, “Pumpkin, Pumpkin”! This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day kindergarten plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. Activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.
This “Pumpkin, Pumpkin” sub plan contains 21 slides and includes a 5 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a read aloud of Jeanne Titherington’s book. Children are questioning, predicting, and building vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. Following the read aloud the class will use the “Predictable Chart” activity to practice making and reading sentences about pumpkins. Children will love playing the fun, interactive “Alphabet Pumpkin Match” game where students mingle amongst themselves while looking for their upper/lower case letter match. The writing activity will ask students to draw and write about a favorite fall activity. (This is optional class book material.)
In the area of Math the class will complete a fun “Pumpkin Sequence Book” by using a “Word Bank” and drawings to show the stages of pumpkin growth. The class will collect information using the “Pumpkin Graph” activity, including a follow-up discussion where students analyze and compare data. Children will enjoy the fun “Pumpkin, Pumpkin Glyph” as they answer questions and add specific features to their pumpkin.
Also included in this lesson plan are directions for the whole group “Pumpkin Game” and a “Pumpkin Finger Play”, as well as additional literature ideas.
Throughout their day, your students are following the Core Standards and will not miss a beat with your absence!
