Love the book by Stephen Kellogg? Then you’ll love our plan, “The Missing Mitten Mystery”. This “In A Pinch” emergency sub plan is ready when you're not, making your emergency sub planning a breeze! This one full day kindergarten plan provides engaging activities in Integrated Language Arts and Mathematics that your students will enjoy, and a substitute will appreciate during your absence. Activities are simply inserted into your regular day schedule as defined in your general information folder for a substitute teacher. If time allows, some classroom teachers prefer to prepare (copy) and organize the materials the sub will be using. We recommend the sub replace and prepare all items used before the end of their duty day so the plan is ready for future use.
This “Missing Mitten Mystery” sub plan contains 18 slides and includes a 4 page detailed lesson plan with easy to follow instructions for each activity. The activities are interactive and develop good listening skills. In the area of Integrated Language Arts the lesson begins with a read aloud of Stephen Kellogg's book. Children are questioning, predicting, and building vocabulary as they listen to and make meaning of the story. Specific and engaging questions are provided. Following the read aloud is a writing extension that allows students to make a text-to-self connection using picture and words. (This is optional class book material.) The letter activity is a fun, interactive “I have/Who has” alphabet game where children will practice using their listening skills and following directions to sequence the letters of the alphabet.
In the area of Math the class will complete the mitten graphing activity followed by a discussion that analyzes and compares data. The “Mitten Glyph” will have students decorating a large mitten according to how they answer specific questions. Students will learn about ordinal numbers and number identification when they play the Ordinal Number game. This is a fun opportunity to practice number sequence.
As a bonus, the students can also create a painted mitten for an art project! (Additional supplies needed for this project include paint, marble, and box lid.)
Throughout their day, your students are following the Core Standards and will not miss a beat with your absence!
