Product Description

Do you love to read to your class? Do your kinders understand what reading is all about? Do they acknowledge that they are thinking while they are reading (or being read to)? This read and respond pack is a tool to guide your little learners to be "active" readers!

This pack will grows your learners from just listening to a story, to discussing the structure of a book, to identifying/recalling details (setting, characters, events, problem/solution) and to applying all that they've learned in a unique kinder-writing project. Designed to reach all different kinds of learners and differentiated to meet the needs of your whole class!

It has pieces to use on all levels: whole group, small group and individual practice.

Included:

  • 5 posters featuring popular text structures that your class can use to categorize favorite read alouds - see sample download for explanation of all 5
  • 6 half page labels to facilitate class discussion on the specific details (setting, characters, events, problem/solution)
  • 15 pages of response sheets - designed with the detail icons for students to respond independently
  • 6 different colored reading and retelling bookmarks
  • ideas for creating different version class books
  • a double-sided planning page for students to plan their own problem and solution story that features a pattern structure (Yes! even in kindergarten!)
  • a 13 page blank book template featuring the icons for students to transfer their planning page ideas into their own story
  • photos of sample student work and a sample lesson plan flow

Creating readers and writers that think alike is possible!

I start planting these seeds in the early fall and now (early spring) I can't often read through a story for the first time without my kinders starting to dissect it's structure and pulling out the bits of the author's language that they love and want to use in their own writing. I hope you find something similar too!
