This package includes 6 challenges that address math outcomes concerning circles (area, circumference, diameter and radius).
Students complete an initial challenge which will randomly place them into groups (they must perform certain calculations).
Students then work together within their group to complete six challenges which are presented to them, one at a time, on cards that you will print out. I’ve put the challenges two to a sheet, so all you have to do is print them out on to cardstock (laminate them if you have the time) and cut them apart. You should have a set of cards for each group.
As students are working on the challenges, you are free to circulate and note who is struggling with what concepts and who is moving quickly through the challenges.
Challenges include finding area of various circles, finding the circumference of a cookie and designing a package (using their math skills) to hold the cookies, looking for real life applications of circumference etc... Six challenges in all.
This package is great, because it has differentiation built right in. You can adjust things so that certain students only complete certain challenges. Also, you can differentiate through the groupings of students - deciding who will work with who so that students can help each other out!
If you need some hands-on and fun activities to do with your grade 6-8 students, to practice the concepts associated with circles - download this resource!
