Instead of using surveys this year to get to know your students, try incorporating glyphs into your classroom! Glyphs are pictorial forms of data collection. This glyph is a fun way in which to connect math to the Back to School Get-to-Know you activities.
Students color and draw on their glyph according to the directions on the direction page. Then, students are able to read the glyphs and collect data about the topics for the glyph. This glyph is focused on general get-to-know you topics - favorite color, family information, hobbies etc...
Once glyphs are completed, students should find ways to display the class data - bar graphs, pie graphs, pictographs, tables, etc.... I like to assign groups to one specific data set. For easy data collection and a cute display, hang up all glyphs on a bulletin board.
Another activity would be to write facts from the glyphs. On sentence strips. For example,
About half of the class loves pizza.
Lastly, this is a good way for students to introduce each other to the class! They have to use the glyph to figure out information to their partner.
NOTE: This is a part of a bigger file called GLYPHS GALORE. It includes three glyphs and tons of graphs, tables, and line plots for students to display their data. Check it out!

I have been a teacher in my mind for as long as I can remember! So many times, I fought with my sister and her friends to listen to me teach little lessons and grade fake papers. "School" was my favorite thing to play! Now I get to play real "school" everyday! I have been a "real" teacher for four years. My second home is in a bright, colorful third-grade classroom in Iowa full of bright, colorful little kiddos.
I believe to teach you have to flexible, take risks, and try new things! I am always looking for new ideas so I have fallen in love with Teacher's Notebook! I also love creating new things and that fact that I can now share them! Please stop at my shop at look around. If nothing else, download all the FREEBIES and follow me!
