Teach your students first person point of view with this fun and inspiring creative writing activity!
The writing project consists of student guidelines for writing and visual aid project (with places for due dates and peer editing/revising signature blanks), a poetry pre-writing organizer, & a grading rubric for teachers. Students write from the point of view of an animal they choose. I encourage them to choose animals other than common domestic animals. I actually list them on the board so that the class can see them all and no two students write about the same animal.
One requirement is a creative visual display, which supplements the poem for oral presentation and student work displays.
The focus is the first person point of view literary element, which is an easy literature element for them to remember through this activity; the guidelines instruct students to include various aspects about the animals--which gets them to go look for the information in books, magazines, and computers and not just write what they think an animal does, eats, likes, etc.
I do this project at the beginning of the year, and they really have fun presenting them, as well as hearing about all the different animals! A fun presentation is easier for students to do in front of their classmates too! This helps "break" them in for lots of great presentations through the year!
It's a great cross-curricular activity for Science too!
I am a middle school language arts teacher. Posted products are those I currently use successfully in the 8th grade classroom or have successfully implemented in grades I've previously taught: K, 2nd, 5th, & 7th.
Currently teaching 8th grade, the bulk of my teaching products caters to the middle school level. However, many skills are just as appropriate for upper elementary and/or high school! Some skills don't change, and we all have a wide array of student ability levels in which to accomodate. This allows many products to be perfect for various grades!
The majority of my products are for the language arts area, while quite a few of those can be cross-curricular items for social studies. Several products are for any subject/grade, such as classroom management items, reward slips, behavior incentives, etc.
