This is an ELA Guided Reading and Writing Unit for Grades K-1. Pages 5-8: Word Wall Vocabulary Picture Word Cards-  Copy , laminate and cut picture word cards to be used for picture word match and picture word or picture sort activity that can be done in centers.

Page 9: Picture/Word Sort : Students sort pictures or word cards into categories

Page 15: Roll the Die and Read: Copy and Laminate for reading practice. (Kindergarten) Roll the die and read what is in the box.

Lesson Plan:

Read Aloud Books:  Ask student if they have ever been to the beach. Read books about the beach. Talk about what they see and what people do at the beach. Make a word web about the beach and add beach words that students suggest.

Pages 10- 14 Guided Reading Make and Take Book:

Tell students that one strategy is the main idea and details. As they read think about what the main idea and details are.

Do a picture walk through the book and ask students what they think will happen in the book.

Read the story and have students follow. Have the students read page one. Ask what they learned. Remind students to circle words they don’t know.

Have students continue and ask questions after one or two pages.

Continue until the book is finished.

After Reading: Ask student what did they thought the main idea was and describe some details. Go over the Comprehension Questions and Center activities.

Page 21- At the Beach Chant. Students will enjoy acting it out.
