The activities in this printable are intended to supplement Houghton Mifflin Reading second grade Theme 2 . These activities make a great addition to your learning centers, work stations, or small group instruction!
For each of the 3 stories I've included: 2 sets of tiered cut and sort word cards, a sort and record sheet, and 2 tiered alphabetizing activity sheets. Tier 1 cards contain one and two-syllable words, while tier 2 cards contain two, three, and four syllable words. Students identify the target phonics/spelling pattern by highlighting the pattern in the words (what child doesn't LOVE a highlighter!), divide the words into syllables, then cut, sort and glue the words to their corresponding recording sheet. Students then alphabetize their words on a separate recording sheet. Directions, extension activities, and answer keys are included.
Stories and corresponding spelling/phonics patterns:
Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night-2 sounds of g
Exploring Parks with Ranger Dockett-2 sounds of c
Around the Pond: Who's Been Here?-double consonants and VCV pattern
sorting by syllabication rule
