Sight words are an essential part of learning to read for children. Common Core standards include sight words as early as Kindergarten. I love to find fun ways to practice sight words. Traffic Jam is one of those ways! Traffic Jam is my version of the classic word game Bang. My kiddos love to play this game!
Traffic Jam needs no teacher guidance and reinforces those sight words kids can't see enough! Traffic Jam uses the 100 most common sight words. I begin in the fall with the easiest words and add words when the time is right. If you are unfamiliar with this game, the instructions for play are listed below and included in this packet.
Directions for play:
1) Teachers print, laminate, and cut out the word cards.
2) Teachers place the word cards in a sturdy container. I do not recommend paper bags for this unless your students are extremely gentle.
3) Students take turns drawing a word from the container, If the first child can read the word, he keeps it. If he cannot read the word, he gets help from a friend or puts the word back. That up to you. If a child draws Traffic Jam!, he puts all his cards back. Then play goes to the next player.
4) There is never a winner to this game because students will continue to draw the Traffic Jam! card.
This game contains the 100 most commonly written words.
