The more students have a chance to get up in front of their peers and speak, the easier it becomes. I have students begin by answering questions in our class meetings. My Special Object is a beginning formal speaking assignment. Think of it like an elaboration on show and tell.
I have included a rubric and graphic organizer for this assignment. These are the same for my larger unit on public speaking called “Six Steps to Creating a Better Class Presentation.”
If students struggle thinking of three subtopics, consider the following questions:
How did you receive this object?
Why is this important to you?
How do you use/ display it?
I let students use the buddy system when delivering their class presentations. While one student is speaking, a buddy can stand quietly beside them holding any visuals. I find this helps all students feel more comfortable standing in front of an audience. The buddy also gets practice being in front of the audience also.
