This is the second pack of the Seasonal Word Sort Series. Included are four winter word sorts, a Christmas word sort, two sorting sheets, and directions for writing four forms of poetry. If you need more examples of poetry, visit my poetry blog Poems of Silliness.
If you have already introduced the activities as whole group or small group lessons, these can become centers for fast finishers or ways to build vocabulary during literacy time. I would also have access to a dictionary, a thesaurus, and a rhyming dictionary for students to add more words to their lists. I also like including travel magazines like the ones I get as a part of my AAA membership. These have pictures for writing prompts as well as seasonal words.
I have designed the cards so they may be cut and pasted. Depending on the level of your students, you may want to have them write the words in the categories and add more examples.
When introducing a new form of poetry to my students, I model the form and share plenty of examples. I have students create ideas and we write a poem together. I usually have a session when students write as partners. I insist that some writing sessions are silent and independent. At the end of a writing session, I invite students to share.
