I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share one of my absolute favourite books! The main character, Lilly, is the most adorable mouse you will ever meet and you will just fall in love with her! This girl has character I tell you!! Girls and boys love this book and can easily relate to her. This is one of my favourite units to teach! This unit combines inferring and letter writing. I have packed this unit with absolutely everything you will need to teach these two skills thoroughly.
This unit includes:
*bulletin board posters for inferring and letter writing
*detailed inferring posters (what is inferring, your schema, using clues from the text)
*posters of the success criteria for letter writing, parts of a friendly letter, purpose of a friendly letter
*poster for author's message and a black and white copy for the students
*student sized copies of the success criteria (colour and black and white)
*page of themes and lessons to be learned
*The Friendly Letter Song (colour and black and white)
*7 letter writing activities ~ I recreated pages from the book and then the students are asked to make an inference from the story and write a letter to a certain character
*Inferring Report Card Activity ~ This is a really neat activity because the children will make inferences and apply them to a real-life situation ~ They get to write part of Lilly's Report Card! The comments are the proof from the text. My students loved this activity!
*Inferring Character Traits ~ the students get to infer character traits for Mr. Slinger and Lilly! This is a really fun activity and also makes a cute bulletin board!
I know that you and your students will have a blast with this unit! An added bonus is that you will be covering several essential literacy skills in fun and meaningful ways! I have done all the work for you ~ all you need is a copy of the book and a photocopier! PRESTO! You have a complete literacy unit ready to go in no time!
