I love picture books and I love teaching with them. I use them as inspiration for my packets. Having come from a Reading Workshop school we really picked the books apart to come up with the best skills and strategies for that particular picture book. The book packets I create usually have a few different thinking maps and worksheets to help master the reading skill or strategy you are teaching. This helps to focus student learning and helps you to see how well they understand that skill or strategy. My daughter draws me such cute clip art to go with the picture books, I will usually include a math and language arts activity (that has the character on it) to use as a center activity. In this way, your students can spend a little more time with these wonderful characters. On my blog The Picture Book Teacher's Edition, I review these picture books and list ALL the skills and strategies I think work best with that particular book as well as give examples of all the questions you can ask to get your students thinking in that strategy or skill. I hope you find something of interest that you and your students could use to enhance your picture book experience!
