My students struggle with understanding the difference between they're, their, and there. Who can blame them? They're confusing homophones!
Whenever it seems like they need a refresher, I use these Do Nows. Sometimes, instead of using them as Do Nows/Bell Work, I present the slides during class and have them take notes and do the activities in their notebooks.
I find this handy when the class is getting restless or unruly. I display slide one, tell them to take notes and do the activities. Then we trade and grade and turn them in. Since they know it will be due right away, they settle down and do it. The fact that it's a presentation they have to follow along with helps, too. They know there is no way they can put it off or copy it from somebody else, like they could do with a worksheet. Once I take it off the screen, its gone!
For differentiation, some students can do all four sentences, some fewer. I teach middle and high school. Many of my students are English learners or emergent readers, so you might judge that this lesson would work well with lower grades than what I tagged here.
There are four groups of four sentences. Each group of sentences has a topic. I find that having some context helps my English learners understand what the sentence is about, which makes it easier for them focus on the grammar and choosing the right homonym.
