Opinion Writing: 100th Day of School

This activity is connected to CCGPS ELACCKW1: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are "writing" about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book. The topic for this opinion writing packet is “100" for the “100th day of school.”  These opinion writing activities are great to put in a writing center for students to choose which pictures to use to give their opinions about or for a mini lesson on opinion writing. This pack includes a title page and 8 pages with each page containing picture choices of two items for them to choose which they would rather have 100 of. Each page begins, “In your opinion, which would you rather have? Why?” with the two picture/word choices shown. The choices on the eight pages include: 100 pieces of candy or 100 apples, 100 dollars or 100 pennies, 100 pets or 100 cookies, 100 bugs or 100 dinosaurs, 100 friends or 100 flowers, 100 balloons or 100 valentines, 100 books or 100 crayons, 100 pancakes or 100 cupcakes.

There are six/seven blank lines for students to write on telling why they think their choice is the best. Students love telling their opinion. This activity encourages students to give the reason why they think their choice is better. Teachers can also use these writing activities as a whole class activity. Assigning these activities for a homework assignment can include parents in helping increase their child’s writing skills. However you choose to use these activities, I hope your students develop a love for writing.
