Fortunately, Jamie survives and manages to scramble aboard an overturned lifeboat. Frantic cries fill the night, lessening more and more as people in the water freeze and die, leaving an unearthly silence.

Of the 2200 people on the Titanic, only 705 survived. In New York, the survivors are astounded to see ten thousand people awaiting the rescue ship Carpathia's arrival — it is the news story of the century. Weeks later Jamie learns that his father's body was recovered, and is being returned to Halifax. He begins the journey there, with his brother, to bring his father's body home for burial.
