这本书的内容主题与中文的《中国哲学史》两卷本并无出入，本书第一章到第十六章大致相当于两卷本的第一卷，第十七章到书末相当于第二卷。但本书的篇幅却明显地缩短了。举例来说，我所译的两卷本中的第一卷有四百五十四页，而本书比第一卷还减少了五十页。其所以能做到这一点，是由于本书删除了原两卷本中一些次要的思想家，对主要思想家所用的篇幅也减少了。本书对两卷本中思想家的生平、著作时间的真伪的考证、参考书目和注释也压缩了篇幅。尽管有这些不同，学术水平并未因此减色，它的资料和诠释都十分准确，立论也平实全面。(There is no inconsistency in content and topic between this book and A History of Chinese Philosophy, the two-volume edition in Chinese. Chapter 1 to Chapter 16 of this book are roughly equivalent to Volume 1 of the two-volume edition, and Chapter 1 7 to the end of this book are equivalent to Volume 2. But the length of this book is obviously reduced. For instance, Volume 1 of the two-volume edition translated by me has 454 pages, while this book is 50 pages shorter than Volume 1. The reason for this is that this book deletes some secondary ideologists in the original two-volume edition and reduces the length for the major ideologists. This book also cuts the length for the verification of authenticity of the ideologists' life stories and the time of their works as well as the references and explanatory notes of the two-volume edition. Despite of these differences, the academic level is not lowered. The materials and annotations of this book are very accurate, and the propositions are natural and comprehensive.)
