The story is described like this: On Christmas Eve, the poor woodcutter's two children Tyltyl and Mytyl were longing to get Christmas gifts, but they could only see the brightly-lit grand occasion in the palace next to their home. When they are sleeping peacefully, they dreamt of a fairy asking them to look for the blue birds symbolizing happiness for her sick daughter. The fairy gave them a magic diamond and they could see a variety of scenes after turning the diamond. Accompanied by light, water, bread, fire, sugar, milk, cats and dogs, they saw a variety of wonderful views, they experienced innumerable trials and hardships and overcame numerous difficulties and dangers, but they always lost the blue birds after having got it. After waking from this dream, Tyltyl gave his beloved dove to his neighbor, but the dove became a blue bird, finally he realized the blue bird was with him all along. This play shows that only people are willing to give happiness to others can they get happiness. )
