One very cold Halloween night, just when Suriana Lugo thought that nothing could possibly ruin her ninth birthday party, she learns that she is very mistaken.

A magical package containing a potion is delivered by a very strange messenger, right to the front door of the home of the apprentice witch. The messenger imparts the news of the disappearance of an old wizard who is ruler of the Magic Castle of Palaquin.

Finding themselves drawn into the wizard's disappearance, Suriana and her grandparents are forced to leave their home in order to keep the mysterious magic potion safe from the arms of the enemy.

A dark secret that has been kept for hundreds of years takes Suriana far from her home town in Massachusetts to a tiny place in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, a place where Suriana gets separated from her grandparents. She makes new friends, however, she also encounters horrendous creatures called Alewitches. The Alewitches are ready to do whatever it takes to prevent Suriana from making it to her final destination and delivering the magic potion to its rightful owner.
