Sea turtle eggs have long been exploited by the locals at Redang Island. Turtle eggs have been eaten for centuries and believed to possess aphrodisiac properties. By the 1980s the nesting of sea turtles in Redang Island had decreased dramatically. In 1993 with funding from Berjaya Redang Resort, the Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU) of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu embarked on a mission to conserve and protect the sea turtles in Redang Island. Over the years, various researches were conducted to understand the biology, ecology and threats faced by these ancient reptiles. Numerous outreach programmes were also conducted to educate and increase public awareness on sea turtles. This book is dedicated to all who have been involved in SEATRU and contributed in one way or another to it's continued success.
