Apocalypse Cultivation follows the life of an adventurer named Jake in post-apocalyptic America. The setting is similar to Shadowrun and System Apocalypse by Tao Won g, where technology still exists, but so does magic. A tragic event called Violet Rain, or Purple Rain led to billions of deaths, civilization collapsing, and monsters roaming the planet. The danger of myths, legends, monsters, and portals to other worlds appearing on Earth has resulted in a surge of magical understanding and technological advancement. When the story starts, Jake is introduced as the leader of a team of adventurers, wielding firearms, magic, and blades to dispose of monsters. He had just begun learning to be a cultivator after several years already spent as a mage. Then he and his team is sucked into a hell world, where he learns that new portals have also opened on earth, allowing monsters and demons from other terrible places to invade. Basically, the world back home is doomed. Everyone else in the MC's strike force dies, but he survives through a combination of cunning and cultivating the demonic energy of the world he finds himself in. In fact, he survives for so long, he begins to go a bit crazy. The demons fear him, regarding him as a kind of boogie man. After finally being hunted down and cornered, he sets off a chain of events that leads to his death, and accidental resurrection. This earns the ire of an evil god, Ahriman, and he is sent back in time to the day that the apocalypse began. However, the evil god was able to ensure Jake is right in the middle of the Purple Rain event that turned so many people into monsters in his first life. Jake is turned into a zombie, and in the first book, must figure out how to deal with his noew limitations, and still try to rescue his family who were all murdered in his first life. He also meets Morrigan, a dark goddess who takes an interest in him and gives him hints about the larger conflict taking place in the universe. She explains how he can earn the power to evolve into different types of monsters. His later evolution into a stronger species of monster is a core aspect of the plot. The Morrigan wants to recruit Jake to be a player in the larger, universe-spanning conflict between the light and the dark, a war that Earth has just recently rejoined. As the story continues, Jake fails to save his family, with only one small glimmer of hope related to his sister, but saves some children, an act that causes character development and pushes him towards saving his hometown, and the entire state of Georgia from an evil god. At the end of the story, Jake will accept the Morrigan's proposal, but on a contract basis, and she send him to the cultivation world to meet up with his old teacher, and to grow in power before the inevitable future clash with Ahriman's forces on Earth. This is a cultivation story with elements of eastern fantasy, but also includes LitRPG and GameLit tropes.
